Getting Started#
Unpacking the Device#
When you open the package, you should find the following:
Printalyzer Timer Base Unit
Printalyzer Meter Probe peripheral
Printalyzer DensiStick peripheral
Footswitch peripheral
Power cord specific to your country
Variety of accessories
Remove the base unit and peripherals from the box, and then unwrap them from any internal packaging.
On the base unit itself, make sure that the power switch is in the off (down) position and that the blackout switch is also in the off position.
In addition to the included power cord, you will also need a pair of adapter cords that have an IEC320-C14 plug on one end and your country’s outlet type on the other end. These are typically not included, as they are easier to order locally. If your country’s outlet is sufficiently narrow (e.g. US Type), a simple adapter will work. For larger outlet types, you will need a cord for proper clearance.
Plugging In Power#
Connect the Printalyzer Timer to power with the included power cord.
Connect your enlarger to the Printalyzer Timer’s “Enlarger” port using a IEC320-C14 adapter cord. For simple enlargers, this will be the power cord going to the enlarger’s lamp. More sophisticated enlargers that utilize a voltage stabilized power supply will typically not connect their line power cord directly, and have a separate power cord for this purpose.
Connect your safelights to the Printalyzer Timer’s “Safelight” port using a IEC320-C14 adapter cord. It is very useful to connect your safelights to the Printalyzer Timer, as illumination from safelights can and will affect light readings taken by the Meter Probe. If you absolutely cannot connect your safelights to the Printalyzer Timer, then you will need to explicitly turn them off (or completely cover them) during any operation that requires use of the Meter Probe.
Alternative Power Control#
While traditional photographic enlargers and safelights are controlled by switching power outlets on and off, more modern designs may use a more sophisticated digital control mechanism. To support these, the Printalyzer Timer also provides a DMX512-compatible control port. While both the enlarger and safelights are controlled using switched outlets by default, either can be alternatively configured for DMX512 control.
Turning On the Device#
If either your enlarger or safelights have separate power switches, then now is the time to turn them on.
Power on the device by toggling the power switch on the rear of the unit to the on (up) position. It should then briefly flash a logo and make a beep, then transition to the “Home” screen where several numbers are displayed.
If your safelights are properly connected, their outlet should now be receiving power and they should turn on.
If your enlarger is properly connected, it should now turn on and off whenever you press the the focus button.
Note
DMX512 controlled enlargers and safelights will not work without additional setup, as described in the sections covering their respective configuration menus.
